As you know, the supplementary financial settlement concluded with the Government of Hong Kong provided that His Majesty's Government would retain any recovery of the funds of the British Red Cros8 Society amounting to £115,000, which were frozen in Tokyo.

In your letter of the 31st August No. IF 16/011 and IF 23/7/05, you said that you were taking up direct with the Bar Office, the question of recovery of this sum, and that no action on the part of the Colonial Office was required. I have now heard from the War office that a remittance of £115,660. 2. 118. has been received from the War Organisation of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of set. John. The or office add that in a letter from you they have

been instructed to pay this to us to be brought to account as an Exchequer Extra Receipt. This however, appears to be slightly at variance with your letter of the 31st August, and before letting the War ffice know that we accept the credit, I should be grateful for your confirmation that it is the Treasury's intention that the Colonial Office should be responsible for bringing to account this amount.

Yours sincerely,

R... MARRIS, ESQ.,

TREASURY.
